Book & Paper crafts:

Paper today is used in many forms like newspaper, storytelling, packaging and wrapping. This six week project is to introduce the book as an Art to the public and to teach students paper engineering and the endless creativity paper can provide us.

WEEK 1
In introduce students to book binding; there would be a demonstration of basic binding such as concertina books, pamphlets, and Japanese binding.

WEEK 2
As students become familiar with their design and ideas, this session can introduce star books and hard cover books which is more practical and creative. These include how the book is bound and ways to connect the boards.

WEEK 3
This is a customising workshop, where we do not have to work on the boundaries of the book, but to change it. This includes changing the book as a whole and to personalise it. E.g. cutting out paper and making something old into art.

WEEK 4
This session can initiate a more independent and assisted workshop where pop ups and interactive books are shown. Students can begin design their own book ideas, and talk about what they would like to do.

WEEK 5
From the previous week, we would like to come to a decision on students design and begin in the making of their specific design.

WEEK 6
Completing final piece.
NOTE: The outline of this schedule is subject to change depending on each individual student and their interests. Students will be assisted to ensure safety in using blades and help. Each session will have examples of the work in which students may want to produce and customise.

OUTCOME OF PROJECT
The outcome of this project is to provide practical experience for students and to introduce the book as a medium. The course is a combination of paper art and crafts depending on the student’s interest to produce a book individually or as a team. There will be a exhibition for these students to present and explain their work to the public.
